Viscous broths, fungi and plant cells scaled to pilot volumes keep their low-shear environment in this airlift design. A tall 316L column of 50–500 L circulates by 0.5–2 vvm gas through riser and downcomer. DO is managed by gas flow, enrichment or back pressure, pH 2–12, and the vessel is steam sterilised in place.
