Unglazed porcelain and quarry tiles are graded by the volume of material a steel wheel removes. A 200 mm steel disc turns at 75 rpm for 150 revolutions against the counterweighted specimen while F80 alumina falls at no less than 100 g per 100 revolutions. The chord of the groove is then read to 0.1 mm and converted to a removed volume.
