The crumb test is the fastest first look at whether a clay is dispersive. Natural crumbs or 15 mm cubes are placed in ten 250 mL beakers of distilled water or dilute NaOH. The colloidal cloud is graded 1 to 4 at 2 min, 1 h and 6 h using the laminated chart.
