The saturated surface-dry point of sand is judged by how a moulded cone slumps, so the cone and tamper must be correct. The brass cone is 40 mm at the top, 90 mm at the base and 75 mm high, used with a 340 ± 15 g tamper with a 25 mm face. A 300 × 300 mm steel base and a 500 mL flask complete the set.
