Labs using fluorogenic or chromogenic agars for E. coli and coliforms can count faster by reading the fluorescence directly. This counter excites at 365 or 460 nm with 450, 530 and 620 nm emission filters, imaging on a 5–12 MP camera. It reads 55 and 90 mm plates in about 3–15 seconds and detects colonies from 0.1–0.3 mm.
