Translucent, pigmented or similar-coloured colonies can trick camera-based counters. This counter scans plates with a 635–780 nm semiconductor laser and a transmission detector, so colour does not affect the result. It reads 90 mm plates, or 55 mm with an adapter, in about 3–15 seconds, counting colonies from 0.3 mm.
