Bituminous membranes that crack in winter leak at every fold, so cold flexibility is declared for each grade. The bath holds -40 °C to +20 °C at ±0.5 °C, and a motorised device bends two 140 × 50 mm specimens through 180° over 20, 30 or 50 mm mandrels in 10 ±1 s. Specimens stay immersed during bending, so they do not warm before the crack check.
