Air-entraining vortices at pump intakes are easiest to explain with a large, steady vortex on a stand-alone rig. A 400 mm clear vessel takes outlets from 10–30 mm and tangential inlet nozzles, fed by a 0.37 kW pump from a 120 L sump. A 300–3000 L/h rotameter reads flow, and a traversing 0.1 mm needle gauge records the surface.
