Many highway specifications judge layer smoothness by the standard deviation of a 3 m reference profile. This towed meter rides on 8 wheels over a 3 m base with a central measuring wheel reading ±25 mm at 0.01 mm every 100 mm. Towed at up to 12 km/h, it prints the standard deviation for each 100 m section on site.
