Heavy-traffic and thick-layer mixes are rated on the large device with a real pneumatic tyre. This tester runs a 400 × 8 tyre at 5000 ± 50 N and 1 Hz over 410 ± 5 mm on two 500 × 180 mm slabs, in a 30–70 °C chamber at ± 2 °C. Rut depth is measured at 15 points per slab to 0.1 mm.
