This manual apparatus cools to -40 °C with alcohol and dry ice, the operator holding 1 °C/min while cranking the bending device to shorten the 41 × 20 × 0.15 mm spring steel plate by 3.5 ± 0.2 mm. The crack temperature is read on a 0.5 °C thermometer.
