Spinning Drop Tensiometer for Ultra-Low Interfacial Tension

Enhanced oil recovery and microemulsion work need interfacial tensions far below what other methods detect. Spinning a drop inside a 1.5–3.5 mm capillary at 100–15000 rpm, stable to ±0.1 rpm, this tensiometer measures down to 10⁻⁶ mN/m. Temperature runs from ambient to 200 °C. A monochrome CCD with zoom lens tracks drop shape on about 1–2 mL of sample.
