Cables carry load purely in tension, and seeing how a stiffening girder spreads deck load into the cable explains how long-span bridges work. We supply suspension bridge models with two- and three-hinged stiffening girders, a cable statics apparatus, a cable-stayed bridge model on load cells and a cable vibration rig for tension by frequency. Girder type, how cable tension is read and whether dynamics is on the syllabus decide the choice. Teaching notes refer to tension components under BS EN 1993-1-11 and bridge loading in BS EN 1991-2.

How to specify
- A load cell in the cable anchorage gives tension directly and saves balancing time.
- If influence lines are taught, choose a model with a rolling load on the deck.
- Order a spare cable; kinked cables give scattered readings.
