Beam Deflection Apparatus — Structural Engineering Lab Equipment

Measuring how far a beam deflects under load is the first experiment where students check elastic theory against real numbers. We build simply supported and cantilever bench rigs with dial gauges, digital versions with load cell supports, curved bar and ring apparatus, and a computerised rig with software. Span, number of support conditions and whether you want manual or logged readings decide the choice. Beam sections and deflection limits used in the manuals follow BS EN 1993-1-1 and BS EN 1990.

How to specify

  1. Order beams in at least two materials so students can compare elastic moduli.
  2. Check the span is adjustable if you also want to teach overhang and propped cantilever cases.
  3. A spare set of slotted weights avoids queues when several groups share one frame.
