Strain energy and Castigliano's theorem make more sense once students see curved members deflect both sideways and down. This apparatus mounts five spring steel specimens, including a semicircle, quadrants, a 300 mm ring and a davit, on a 600 × 600 mm backboard. Two 0.01 mm dial gauges read horizontal and vertical movement under weights up to 20 N in 1 N steps.
