A mould whose spring has weakened will understate expansion, so labs need a quick way to check each one. This tester hangs a 300 g weight on one pointer and reads the gap change on a 0–80 mm scale against the 17.5 ± 2.5 mm acceptance band. A cast-iron base with levelling screws keeps the reading stable.
