Seepage under dams and weirs and drawdown around wells decide whether hydraulic structures stay stable and whether aquifers can supply a town. We build a Hele-Shaw viscous flow apparatus, a sand tank for flow nets, an earth dam seepage tank with piezometers, a well drawdown aquifer model and a large digital groundwater tank with sensor arrays. Tank size, the problems you want to model and how you read heads drive the choice. Sand permeability can be checked to ASTM D2434 or ISO 17892-11, and pumping tests are analysed after ASTM D4106.
