Water hammer bursts mains, damages valves and shakes pumping stations, so designers of water supply and hydropower pipelines must understand surge. We build a bench-top fast-valve unit, a floor rig with surge tank, a digital rig with high-speed data capture, a transparent surge tank demonstrator and a long-pipeline research rig. Pipe length, wave speed, valve closure control and sampling rate decide the choice. Surge design limits are covered in BS EN 805, and our transducers are rated to IEC 60770-1 performance tests.
